Picea abies, syn. P. excelsa.
Technical Features
Norway Spruce is a common softwood found in Europe and North America and is often referred to as deal or white wood. It is valued for its flexibility, durability, lightness, extended length, and straightness.
Visual Features
The sapwood of this species is generally white to pale yellow, contrasting with the brown to reddish-brown hues of the heartwood. Prominently marked growth rings are defined by the denser summer wood. Spruce possesses a relatively fine texture, and its grain is typically straight.
Workability
Spruce is easy to work, except for the small tight knots that quickly dull tool edges. It glues satisfactorily using standard bonding procedures. This timber can give poor results when being stained, due to its closed-pore structure. A sanding sealer, gel stain or toner is recommended when colouring Norway spruce timber.
Applications
This common softwood is widely chosen for its versatility for framing and roofing, flooring, joinery, general carpentry and furniture.
